Thresher Shark:

Thresher sharks are known for their big eyes, small mouths, and long caudal fins, which place them at the top of the marine food chain. They can easily be recognized by their caudal fin, which is roughly half the length of their body. The long caudal fin not only aids in high-speed swimming, but it also aids in body balance and ensures a precise strike on prey. Thresher sharks can be found in temperate coastal waters rich in fish and marine mammals. They have strong muscles, firm jaws, and serrated teeth, as well as a good sense of smell and vision. Adult thresher sharks can weigh up to 3500 pounds and measure up to 20 feet in length. The circulatory system of thresher sharks, like that of other sharks, is remarkable in that it conserves body heat produced by muscular contractions while also maintaining body temperature.

Thresher sharks are territorial and take control of the places where they hunt. There is always a balanced food chain in the part of a marine habitat where thresher sharks live. The marine food chain is sensitive, and any population decline or increase in any segment of the food chain disrupts the entire marine ecosystem. Thresher sharks devour small fish like bony fish and squids and keep their numbers under control to keep the food chain in balance. Thresher sharks are migratory sharks that can be seen leaping from the sea.

Conservation Status:

Overfishing has made thresher sharks extremely vulnerable. The thresher shark’s teeth are valuable and are used in jewelry. People hunt them for their fins as well. Because thresher sharks are migratory, they are occasionally caught in nets.
